Obituary

William H. "Bill" Barry, 62, retired Assistant Chief for Methuen Fire Department, passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at Lawrence General Hospital, with his family by his side. He was born on July 14, 1962, to the late John F. and Virginia C. (Hodgson) Barry, in Methuen, MA.

Bill was the definition of a family man. His unequivocal love for them and those around him knew no bounds. He enjoyed watching his children grow through the years and was active in their schooling and sports. He was a "band parent", always attending his children's concerts and events for Methuen High School and UMass Amherst.  Bill enjoyed over 30 years of family vacations on Cape Cod, as well as weekend visits to Mystic, Connecticut with his wife. Bill loved reading, writing, aviation, history, and listening to music.

Bill served for 33 years on the Methuen Fire Department, retiring in 2020 as the Assistant Fire Chief. He also proudly served as Lieutenant and Deputy Chief. Bill was passionate about education, having taught in the Fire Science program at Bunker Hill Community College for many years. He also inspired countless firefighters as an instructor at the Massachusetts Fire Academy, teaching in cities and towns across the state.

Bill was a member of the United States Navy Reserve for 22 years, retiring in 2006 as a Petty Officer First Class. He spent the first part of his career as an aircrewman on a P-3 Orion, an anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircraft. Part of Patrol Squadron 92 (VP-92) out Naval Air Station South Weymouth, Bill's travels took him to Italy, Spain, the Azores of Portugal, as well as countless places in the United States. The later half of his career saw him transition to a Dispersing Clerk role, where he spent much of his time at Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Connecticut.

Bill is survived by his wife of 35 years: Christine E. (Silva) Barry, of Methuen, MA; their children: Ryan J. Barry, and his wife Jennifer, of Wakefield, MA, Michael L. Barry, and his fiancé Hannah, of Haverhill, MA, and Lauren E. Barry, of Seattle, Washington; and his siblings: Mary V. Stranger, and her husband Robert, of Panama City Beach, FL, Kathleen B. Stranger, and her husband Thomas, of Portsmouth, NH, Susan M. Lambert, and her husband Scott, of Hampton, NH, and Michael C. Barry of Methuen, MA.  He also leaves several nieces and a nephew.
