Walter Augustine
"Gus" Flanagan, Jr.
Jul 12, 1949 — Feb 11, 2024
Salem
Walter Augustine Flanagan, Jr., known as "Gus" by his family and friends, passed away unexpectedly with great strength and love on Sunday, February 11, 2024. He was surrounded by his wife of 12 years, his three children, and in the hearts of his grandchildren. His family took comfort knowing that in his passing, he was a hero to others by donating his organs.
Gus was born on July 12, 1949, in Lawrence, MA to Walter Augustine Flanagan, Sr. and Pearl (Adams) Flanagan. Gus graduated from Methuen High School (Tenney High School) in 1967. He enlisted in the United States Army, serving as a Military Police soldier with the 101st Airborne Division. Gus and his first wife raised their three children in Methuen, MA, where he worked for the Methuen Police Department, retiring as a Detective in 2005 after 35 years. Later in life, Gus and Mimi met and bonded over their shared love for cycling and other outdoor pastimes. Gus and Mimi married in 2012 and shared many adventures alongside their dog, Finnegan.
Gus is survived by his wife Mimi; sisters Margaret, Kathleen, and Joanne; brother Michael; children Aaron and his wife, Elizabeth, Kyle, Breanna and her husband, Steve; stepdaughter Natasha; and five grandchildren Silas, Cillian, Madison, Zachary, and Egan.
Gus loved life and enjoyed sharing what made him happy with others. He could be found on trails, in parks, at markets, in bookstores, and in coffee shops sharing stories with anyone who would listen. He once said, "It's not the distance, how long it took you to walk, or how fast. It is what you see, hear, and feel; it is using all five of your senses." We will forever miss him sharing these experiences with us.
