Sister Cecilia (Elizabeth) Coefield, 99, a Sister of Mercy for 81 years died on March 27, 2025 after a long illness. She was a native of Denton, MD and was the daughter of Edward Joseph and Frances (Ronayne) Coefield.
Sister Cecilia received her B.A. degree in education from Mount St. Mary College in Hooksett, New Hampshire, and her M.A. in education from Loyola University of Los Angeles, California. She was a dedicated teacher and administrator in schools in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and California. In New Hampshire she taught at Sacred Heart and St. Christopher's schools in Nashua; St. Joseph School in Keene; St. Mary in Franklin; and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Blessed Sacrament, St. Raphael, St. Patrick, St. Joseph and St. Augustine schools in Manchester. Sister Cecilia served as principal at McDonald School and St. Joseph Junior High School in Manchester and was vice principal at Trinity High School in Manchester. She was also a teacher at Our Lady Star of the Sea School in East Boston and St. Ann School in Gloucester, Massachusetts. For seven years she taught at Mary Immaculate School in Pacoima, California. She often traveled to California to visit family.
After leaving the ministry of education, Sister Cecilia served as activities coordinator at the Warde Health Center in Windham, New Hampshire that involved a wholistic activity program to meet the intellectual, social, and physical needs of each sister. She was also the activity director at the Carpenter Center for Catholic Charities from 1980 until her retirement in 2004. Sr. Cecilia dedication touched many and absolutely made a difference in their lives.
Sister Cecilia had a very special place in her heart for animals, especially Pudgy, her dog.
Sister Cecilia is survived by members of her Mercy community and nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Warde Senior Living Center, 21 Searles Road, Windham, New Hampshire on Friday, April 4, 2025, from 10:00-11:00AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00AM, in the chapel. Her family and friends will miss her loving presence and especially her welcoming smile. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford, New Hampshire. Memorial donations may be made to Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, 15 Highland View Road, Cumberland, Rhode Island 02864-1124, and online at www.sistersofmercy.org.
