Shirley A. (Sweeney) Delaney, 87, passed away on Mother's Day, May 14, 2023, at Greystone Farm at Salem with her family by her side. She was born on June 5, 1935 to the late Bryan and Mary (Broderick) Sweeney, in Billerica, MA.

In 1959 Shirley married the love of her life; William F. Delaney Sr. Bill and Shirley spent 61 years of marriage together until his passing in 2021. Together they lovingly raised 5 children. She tirelessly cared for their family while moving throughout their years together to support the Naval career of Bill. When they were 65 years old Bill and Shirley built their dream house on Cape Cod, where they spent many years creating memories together. Family was the center of Shirley's life. She was the constant nurturer epitomizing what a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother should be.

Besides spending time with her family, Shirley loved to knit; starting at the age of 10 and continuing throughout her life. She made beautiful Afghan blankets, sweaters, hats, scarfs, mittens and Christmas stockings that have become family heirlooms. She was also known for her cooking and famous sand cakes, which many family members received from her on special occasions. She always made everything from scratch and hosted many family holidays and gatherings and often times fed the children of the neighborhood.

She was quick witted and had an amazing sense of humor. She brought happiness and joy to all who were fortunate enough to have known her. She was a woman of great strength and determination and will be missed by many.

Shirley is survived by her children: Bryan Delaney, of Dover, NH, Donna Kneeland, and her husband Glenn, of Chester, NH, David Delaney, and his wife Susan, of New Boston, NH, and William F. Delaney Jr. and his wife Michele, of Mattapoisett, MA; her siblings: Betty, Barbie, Bryan, and Ellie; her grandchildren: Cody, Kelly, Delanie, Corey, Molly, and Ainsley; and her great-grand daughter; Addison.

In addition to her husband and parents, Shirley is predeceased by her son: Thomas Delaney; and her sisters: Sally and Patsie.

Friends and family are invited to Calling Hours on Thursday, May 18, 2023, from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM, at the Carrier Family Funeral Home, 38 Range Road, Windham, NH 03087. A service will be celebrated immediately following the Calling Hours at the Funeral Home at 3:00 PM. Interment will be private to the family at Massachusetts National Veteran's Cemetery, Bourne, MA.
