Obituary

Phillip A. Bistany, 85, of Methuen, MA, passed away on Monday, February 13, 2023, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 20, 1937, to the late Majied and Effie (Hajjar) Bistany, in Lawrence, MA. He attended Lawrence Public Schools and graduated from Lawrence Academy. Phillip went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Boston College.

Growing up on Tower Hill in Lawrence, Phillip's parents owned F.M. Bistany Women's Clothing Store on Broadway in Lawrence.  It was here that Phillip spent most of his childhood helping out around the store and watching movies at the theaters across the street.

After returning home from serving his country with the United States Army in Germany, Phillip was quick to get back to work at the behest of Majied. After finding an ad in the local paper for an insurance adjuster, Phillip found his calling. He worked for The Hartford Insurance Company before starting his own company, Bistany Adjustment Service. When out for a car ride, Phillip couldn't hold back and would often point out places he had visited for cases he worked.  He was always sure to tell you, "I had a case there!" Phillip always tried to make the best of his work, often taking his family with him for a day out or vacation near areas he had work in each week.

On September 18, 1965, Phillip married the love of his life, Barbara E. (Asmar). Soon after they wed, Phillip and Barbara chose to call Methuen home, where they have raised their family for over 55 years.

Phillip's family was always his main priority. A true family man, he was always there for whomever needed him. Not only did he raise his two children, but he also played a significant role in raising his grandchildren, encouraging and guiding them every step of the way. As a Dad, Phillip was always supportive of his children's efforts, even coaching Katie's softball team. He enjoyed taking day trips, often to the beach and having picnics on the rocks of the jetties.

As an eternal optimist, happiness always seemed to follow Phillip. He will be fondly remembered for the countless sayings and songs he sang while working around the house, and was often spotted by neighbors in his shorts and Jack Purcell sneakers clearing snow off the family cars and shoveling so they could get to work in the winter.

In addition to his wife, Phillip is survived by his children: Elizabeth A. Bistany, of Methuen, MA, and Katherine Bistany, of Marshfield, MA; his grandchildren: Bistany and Hannah Godfrey, of Methuen, MA, and Jacob P. Godfrey, of Derry, NH; his brother: Kenneth Bistany, and his wife Yolanda, of Venice, FL; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, and lifelong friends.

In addition to his parents, Phillip is predeceased by his siblings: Donald Bistany, and Dorothy LaGrasse.
