Obituary

Margaret Mary (Doherty) Joyce, affectionately known as "Peg" and lovingly called "Nana" by her family, age 94, of Saugus, MA, and Marathon, FL, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2025.

Born in Boston, MA, on June 2, 1931, Peg carried her Boston roots proudly throughout her life. She was a graduate of Charlestown High School, where she met her beloved husband and lifelong sweetheart, the late James "Jim" Joyce.

Peg worked for New England Telephone after graduating from high school, and later in life served as an outreach worker for the Town of Saugus Council on Aging, where she found great fulfillment connecting with the seniors she served. She dedicated herself to her daughters, Jacqueline and Kelly, her extended family, and friends.

Peg was a longtime member of the Saugus Senior Center Board of Directors and the Ladies Guild at San Pablo Catholic Church in Marathon, Florida.

Known for her perfect memory, quick wit, and warm hugs, Peg had a gift for making everyone around her feel special and remembered. She was well-spoken, kindhearted, and always up to date on Boston sports and current events. She cherished her visits to Ireland to reconnect with family and explore her heritage, loved attending theater performances, and enjoyed Irish step dancing. Peg took joy in the small moments of life—Friday night pizza, sharing a piece of chocolate during a visit, or sending a handwritten card for every occasion—and she created a life rich in simple, meaningful gestures that left a lasting impact on those around her. Fiercely proud of her family, she celebrated every accomplishment as though it were her own and always showed up with her whole heart. Her mark on her family is permanent and profound.

Peg was predeceased by her husband, James "Jim" Joyce; her son-in-law, Richard Schierloh; her sister, Helen Reidy; and her brothers, John Doherty and Bernard Doherty. She is survived by her daughters, Jacqueline Traynor and her husband, Daniel, of Atkinson, NH, and Kelly Schierloh of Christiansted, St. Croix. She was the proud grandmother of Kate Cutuli and her husband, Paul, of Salem, NH, and the adoring great-grandmother of Emma and Daniel Cutuli, who lovingly knew her as "Nana Banana." She will be remembered by her niece, nephews, and dear friends.

Her family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful staff at Greystone Farm in Salem, NH, for the exceptional kindness, care, and compassion they showed Peg. They truly became an extension of her family.

Family and friends are warmly invited to a Funeral Mass celebrating Peg's life on Thursday, October 23, at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew's Church, 2 Searles Road, Windham, NH 03087. Burial will follow at Atkinson Cemetery in Atkinson, NH.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Peg's memory may be made to the Grousbeck Clubhouse of the Boys & Girls Club of Charlestown , a community close to her heart.
