Dr. Leonardo M. Garcia was born and raised Manilla, earned his B.S. in Chemistry at the University of the Philippines in 1954. Completed graduate work at The Ohio State University and earned his PhD at the University of Cincinnati via a Proctor and Gamble research fellowship in 1961. Dr. Garcia worked as a research chemist with several companies.

In the 1970's Dr. Garcia changed his field of specialization to thin functional coating techniques on plastic films, such as vacuum metalizing and radiation curing.

Dr. Garcia's vast experience and technical contacts led him to initiate cooperative R&D work with Arizona University, University of Huston, MIT, Oxford University, Linkoping University (Stockholm, Sweden) focusing on developing reel-to-reel process of intelligent and flexible electronic displays and labels. This cooperative research led to several research presentations at national conferences on technologies such as smart labels, electro-conductive clear coatings, and solar control films. Dr. Garcia is listed as the sole inventor of "Photo Chromic Light Transition Films".

In the 1990's Dr. Garcia and business partner Mrs. Paula Koczur co-invented portable water purification systems and was issued a patent by the US Patent Office. Prototypes of this equipment were introduced at an International Conference / Emergency Aid Equipment Exhibition in Geneva in 1996. He continued to work on many other patentable ideas for many years after.

In retirement Leonardo lived in Salem NH for over 50 years. A volunteer in the town of Salem, Leonardo's passion projects were for tennis courts to be built in Salem for seniors to enjoy playing the sport and sharing his knowledge and love for science with the young. Leonardo was preceded by his wife of 48 years Ramona, and his daughter Athena, and many brothers and sisters. He is survived by his son Michael CS1 USCG and daughter-in-law Nancy, and 4 grandchildren Elizabeth, Patrick, Angela and Joanna, and his sister Zenaida Vuycankiat.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, November 16th, from 10 to 11am at the Carrier Family Funeral Home, 38 Range Road, Windham, NH. A Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow at 11:30 am at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Derry, NH. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Salem, NH.
