Joseph W.
Gagnon Jr.
Jan 30, 1943 — Jul 12, 2025
Salem
Joseph W. Gagnon Jr., 82, of Salem, NH, passed away peacefully at home on July 12, 2025, surrounded by his devoted family. Born in Lawrence, MA, on January 30, 1943, he was the son of the late Joseph Gagnon Sr. and Antoinette (Rallo) Gagnon.
Joe dedicated his life to serving others—through public service, business leadership, and personal generosity. From 1986 to 1992, he proudly served the Town of Salem as a Selectman. Professionally, he was the longtime President and owner of Granite State Mortgage in Salem, where for over 30 years he helped countless families not only secure their homes but also navigate financial decisions with care and wisdom. Earlier in his career, Joe also served as International Sales Manager for Honeywell.
Joe's journey began with a deep spiritual calling. He studied to become a Catholic priest and came close to completing the seminary before discerning an even greater vocation—family life.
A proud veteran, Joe served in the U.S. Navy aboard nuclear submarines, traveling the world and carrying with him a lifelong pride in his military service. In his personal life, he found joy in exploring the Caribbean, scuba diving, taking cruises, and dining in fine restaurants. Yet, his greatest legacy will be his generosity and unwavering willingness to lend a helping hand.
Joe is survived by his beloved fiancée of 36 years, Kathy Winkelman of Salem, NH; his sons, William "Billy" Gagnon and Christopher Gagnon, both of Methuen, MA; his stepchildren, David Winkelman of Windham, NH, and Kimberly Perrella and her husband Frank of Salem, NH; his brother, Michael Gagnon and his wife Linda of Methuen, MA; grandchildren Derek, Brendon, Ariana, and Joey; and great-grandchildren Adrian, Ava, and Joseph. He is also survived by his niece, Lyn Britton of Haverhill, MA; nephews John Gagnon Jr of Sandown, NH, Michael, Jamie, and Danny Gagnon of Methuen, MA, and Matthew Gosselin of Andover, MA.
In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by his brother, John Gagnon, and his sister, Marie Gosselin-Gagnon.
