James Martin Steere, 55, most recently of Derry, New Hampshire, passed away unexpectedly and peacefully at his home on November 1, 2026.
James was a devoted husband and father who found great enjoyment in sharing his interests with those closest to him. A voracious reader, he had a particular love for science fiction and fantasy literature, and delighted in bringing the characters of Terry Pratchett to life through reading aloud to his family. His love and participation in storytelling extended beyond books, as he enjoyed acting, live-action role-playing (LARPing), and attending Renaissance Faires.
Although James claimed to be an introvert, he actively cultivated an extensive and diverse group of friends. He was a founding member of a Thursday night gaming group where for 25 years, nearly every Thursday night, he could be found with his headset on, enjoying the company of some of his best friends. His love for this group was so great, it was a stipulation in his early relationship with Trish, including the traditional annual “Geekend” where they gather in person for eating, gaming and fun. James regaled the crew with serenades, tales, and mayhem.
A lifelong Red Sox fan, he also helped create a decade-plus-running fantasy baseball league with drafting organized around what is known as “Steere’s Law.” Known for his quick wit and unmistakable sense of humor, James was renowned for his puns and dad jokes, which were an enduring part of his personality.
James is survived by his wife, Trisha Steere, and their two children, Zachary, 14, and Zoey, 10. He is also survived by his mother, Sally Steere; his sister, Kat Lai, and her husband, Tim Lai, and their children, Logan and Codi; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
James was predeceased by his father, Richard Steere, and his father-in-law, Dennis Strickland, whom he considered a second father and friend.
Professionally, James served as the eDiscovery Manager at Goldberg Segalla. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Wesleyan University in Connecticut and a Juris Doctor from Boston College. After discovering that his interests leaned more toward legal theory than legal practice, he found his niche in Legal IT and eDiscovery. He also held an ACEDS certification in eDiscovery.
A private gathering to honor and remember James will be held at a later date. Details will be shared with family and friends once arrangements have been finalized.
