Don was born on February 25, 1945, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, to May Margaret (Rennie) and David Black Whittemore. He was raised in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and graduated from Lawrence High School. Don later attended the Haverhill Trade School. Don enlisted in the United States Navy in 1964 and served aboard the USS Belknap. He fondly remembered his time spent with the Navy. Following his service, he worked as an upholsterer, and later worked at Honeywell, where he met his wife, Gayle. The couple raised their family in Salem, NH and later made their home in Windham in 2006. Don began working as an upholsterer for Phillips Academy, where he climbed the ranks, eventually earning the title of Associate Director of Operations. He retired from Phillips Academy in 2009.
In his spare time, Don pursued his true passion, art. He loved using different mediums, such as acrylic paint, paper mâché, clay, and wood carving. He enjoyed teaching painting at the Salem, NH Senior Center. Don also liked sharing his knowledge with other members at the Greater Salem Art Association, of which he was a founding member. He had several hobbies, including fishing, kayaking, wildlife photography, building model ships, astronomy, and video games. He loved motorcycles and was a member of the ROMEOS, a local motorcycle group. Don loved spending time with his family, his neighbors the Richardsons, his art friends, including Robert Hertrich, and his Phillips Academy co-workers.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Gayle (Mathews) Whittemore; his children, Laurie Whittemore of Derry, NH, and Scott Whittemore and his wife Magdalena of Salem, NH; his grandchildren, Grace Whittemore and Connor Willey; and his nephew, Nick Leonardis and his wife Bridget of Salem, NH.
