Obituary

Barbara E. Greenwood, the Matriarch of Thwaites Market, passed away on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on September 14, 1929, to the late Thomas B. and Ruth (Shearer) Thwaites, in Lawrence, MA.

Barbara had many joys in life. Her family, music and faith were above all.  She worked as a baker at her family's market for over 80 years, which was a true testament to her tireless work ethic. Her father, Thomas, taught his three daughters how to work at a young age but he also taught them a wonderful gift in music.

When she was younger, Barbara was a member of the 1947 Girls Undefeated Basketball Team at her school. She then went on to serve as a coach and referee for the same team. Barbara was an organist at the First Methodist Church in Methuen for 40 years, a member of the Methuen Community Chorus, was an accomplished concert pianist and played the grand organ at the Methuen Memorial Music Hall.  Her faith was always in her heart, volunteering at each church she was a part of.   In her free time, Barbara also enjoyed crafting.  She was a very talented painter, crocheter and a braider of rugs; but what she loved most in her free time was spending countless summers at her family's cottage on Cobbetts Pond. Barbara's family was above all, the most important to her. She helped raise her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. And made sure that the work ethic taught to her by Thomas, was also instilled and carried on throughout her family.

Barbara is survived by her children: Kenneth R. Greenwood, and his wife Cynthia, of Windham, NH, Thomas J. Greenwood, of Windham, NH, Lyn Ann Toabe, of Methuen, MA, and Lee Ann Buckley, of Manchester, NH; her 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild; her nieces and nephew and cousins whom she adored.

In addition to her parents, Barbara was predeceased by her husband: Kenneth R. Greenwood; and her sisters: Ruth Lee and her husband Joseph, and Joanne Raitt and her husband William.
